The letter
Dear team,

I've decided to leave at the end of the month, and I wanted to say thank you before I do.

Thank you for the patience in my early years, when I knew less than I pretended to. Thank you for the projects that asked more of me than I knew I could give. Thank you, especially, for the difficult weeks — they taught me what I actually believed in, and what I was just performing.

I'm leaving with nothing but admiration for the work. I hope the next chapter for everyone here is the best one yet.

The story

Someone forwarded the letter to a senior leader I hadn't worked with in three years. He replied directly: "We didn't deserve this." I think about that sentence more than any feedback I ever got in a review.
